Supplement brands have rules that general ecommerce doesn't. The warehouse needs FDA registration. Every batch needs a lot number. Every bottle has an expiration date. And if there's ever a recall, you need to know exactly which customers got which lot, fast.
TL;DR
Supplement fulfillment lives or dies on three things. FDA-registered storage, lot tracking with expiration dates, and FEFO picking so older stock ships first. Without all three, you can't run a recall and you can't keep your customers safe.
Why supplements need a different kind of warehouse
A general 3PL works for apparel or electronics. It does not work for supplements. Supplements are regulated like food. They expire. They need a warehouse registered with the FDA, with systems that track every batch from the dock to the customer's door. Without that, a recall isn't possible.
What vitamin and supplement fulfillment covers
Multivitamins and single-ingredient vitamins
Mineral supplements
Herbal supplements (botanicals, adaptogens)
Sports nutrition (protein, pre-workouts, recovery powders)
Gummies, powders, capsules, tablets, softgels
Functional foods and nutraceuticals
How a supplement order moves through the warehouse
Receiving: lot numbers and expiration dates logged on intake.
Putaway: organized by SKU and lot, with FEFO logic.
Pick: SKU plus lot captured for traceability.
Pack: tamper-evident sealing if specified, branded packaging, customer-facing inserts.
Label and ship: tracking back to the brand's system.
Where supplement fulfillment gets serious
FDA registration. The warehouse must be FDA-registered as a food facility for handling supplements.
Lot tracking. Without it, a recall is impossible. Auditors and retailers will both ask for it.
Expiration dates and FEFO. Older stock ships first. Customers won't tolerate near-expired product.
Recall readiness. If the FDA or a retailer pulls a lot, you need to know who got it. A capable 3PL can pull that list quickly.
Tamper evidence. Customers expect intact seals. A rough warehouse breaks the seal in transit.
What to ask a 3PL before signing for supplements
Are they FDA-registered as a food facility?
Do they capture lot and expiration data on intake?
Do they pick by FEFO?
Can they pull a recall list by lot?
Do they handle recurring and subscription orders?
