Lot tracking is how you connect every unit you ship back to the batch it came from. For supplements, beauty, food, and anything with an expiration date, it is not optional. For every other brand, it cuts recalls, returns, and customer service tickets when something goes wrong with a batch.

TL;DR

Lot tracking ties every unit you ship back to the batch it came from. Required for supplements, beauty, and food. Useful for any brand that wants fast recall response and clean expiration management.

What lot tracking actually does

Every receipt of inventory is tagged with a lot number, often pulled from the manufacturer's batch code. From that point on, the warehouse knows which units came from which batch and when they expire. When you ship an order, the system records which lot left the building. If a batch turns out to be bad, you can identify every customer who got a unit from it, in minutes instead of days.

Who needs lot tracking

Vitamins and supplements — required for FDA recall response and expiration management

Beauty and personal care — formula changes, batch-level quality issues, expiration on actives

Food and beverage — recalls, best-by dates, allergen tracing

Medical devices and OTC — regulatory traceability

Anything with an expiration date — FEFO picking depends on it

High-growth DTC brands — voluntary, but useful for quality assurance and customer service

How lot tracking works in fulfillment

At receiving, each pallet or carton is scanned and its lot number is tied to a physical location. Inventory is stored so the same SKU from different lots stays separated. When an order comes in, the WMS picks the right lot based on rules you set, usually FEFO. Each shipment records which lot went out, so a year later you still know exactly where that unit landed.

How 3PL Center handles lot tracking

3PL Center is an FDA-registered facility with full lot tracking, expiration tracking, and FEFO picking built into our WMS. We segregate inventory by lot, scan against lot at pick, and surface lot data in your portal so you can pull a report whenever you need one. Inventory accuracy runs at 99.9%, which matters most when a recall request lands and you need to know exactly what shipped, to whom, and when.
