Beauty and wellness brands need more from a 3PL than general ecommerce does. Glass bottles break in transit. Skincare and supplements expire. The unboxing is part of the product. A general-purpose warehouse gets one of these wrong and the brand pays for it.
TL;DR
Beauty and wellness fulfillment has three things general ecommerce doesn't. Fragile bottles, expiration dates that need lot tracking and FEFO, and unboxing that's part of the brand. Pick a 3PL that does all three.
Why beauty and wellness brands need specialized fulfillment
Skincare serums in glass arrive broken if they ship in apparel-grade packaging. Supplements without lot tracking can't be recalled. A custom unboxing without trained pickers becomes a regular brown box. Returns hit higher than most categories and used product can't go back to inventory. None of this is hard for a beauty-ready 3PL. All of it breaks a generalist.
What beauty and wellness fulfillment covers
Cosmetics: makeup, palettes, fragrance.
Skincare: serums, creams, lotions, often in glass.
Hair care: shampoos, conditioners, styling.
Personal care: deodorants, soaps, body wash.
Supplements and vitamins: tablets, gummies, powders, with lot and expiration tracking.
Subscription kits: assembled monthly with custom inserts.
How a beauty order moves through the warehouse
Receiving: lot numbers and expiration dates logged on intake.
Putaway: organized so older inventory ships first (FEFO).
Pick: SKU plus lot captured for traceability.
Pack: fragile bottles wrapped and void-filled. Branded inserts and tissue if specified. Discreet outer if requested.
Label and ship: tracking back to the brand's system.
Where beauty fulfillment gets tricky
Fragile packaging. Glass perfumes and serums need wrap and void-fill. A box that ships fine for apparel arrives broken for beauty.
Lot tracking and expiration dates. Without them, you can't run a recall or pull near-expired stock.
FEFO picking. Older inventory ships first. Without it, customers receive product that's almost expired.
Returns. Beauty returns hit higher than most categories. Used product can't go back to inventory.
Unboxing. Custom inserts, tissue, branded mailers. Margins live or die on whether the unboxing matches the brand.
What to ask a 3PL before signing for beauty
Do they do lot tracking and FEFO?
Are they FDA-registered for supplements?
Can they handle fragile packaging without damage rates spiking?
Do they support custom inserts, branded mailers, and discreet shipping?
How are returns processed and graded?
