Food-grade is one of those terms that means something different to every brand that asks about it. For some it’s about FDA registration. For others it’s about pest control programs or sanitation logs. For most, it’s really about “will my product be safe and sellable when it leaves the warehouse?”

Here’s what food-grade actually means, what the requirements look like, and what to ask a 3PL that says it handles food.

What makes a warehouse food-grade

A food-grade warehouse is a storage facility built and operated to keep consumable products safe — packaged foods, beverages, supplements, ingredients, anything that ends up in a human body. The bar is set by the FDA under the Food Safety Modernization Act, with overlapping rules from the USDA for certain categories.

The practical version: documented sanitation, pest control, separation from non-food chemicals, controlled receiving and shipping, traceability, and FDA registration.

Key requirements for food-grade storage

These show up on every food-grade audit and matter for any brand evaluating a 3PL for ambient food or supplements.

FDA registration as a food facility, renewed every two years

Documented sanitation schedule and cleaning logs

Active pest control program with monitored stations

Separation of food, supplements, and non-food SKUs in storage

Lot tracking from receipt through outbound shipment

Expiration date tracking and FEFO (first-expired, first-out) picking

Receiving inspection and rejection process for damaged or compromised inbound

    Documented recall procedures

FDA registration vs other certifications

FDA registration is the baseline — it confirms the facility is on record with the FDA as a food storage operation and is subject to inspection. Some warehouses go beyond that with third-party programs like SQF or BRC, which add audited food-safety standards on top.

Different categories have different needs. Shelf-stable packaged food typically asks for FDA-registered, lot tracking, and FEFO. Supplements layer in expiration tracking and sometimes serialization.

What products belong in a food-grade warehouse

Shelf-stable food and beverage, supplements and vitamins, ingredients and bulk packaging, pet food and treats, and personal care products that touch skin or are taken orally. Anything where contamination risk or expiration matters.

Some categories — anything that needs refrigeration or freezing — require cold-chain capability. That’s a different conversation from food-grade ambient storage.

How 3PL Center handles ambient food and supplements

Our warehouses are FDA-registered and built for ambient (room-temperature) food, supplements, and packaged goods. We run lot tracking, expiration tracking, and FEFO picking on every food and supplement SKU.

We do not currently do cold-chain (refrigerated or frozen storage). If your product needs temperature control, we’ll be straight with you about that during the quote process and help you scope what else you’d need.

For supplement brands specifically, see our supplement fulfillment services.

What to ask before signing with a food-grade 3PL

Are you FDA-registered, and when was the last inspection

Do you do lot tracking on receipt, storage, and outbound

Do you pick FEFO for SKUs with expiration dates

How do you handle damaged or expired inventory

Can you support a recall — how fast and how granular

Where are food SKUs stored relative to non-food

What temperature range do you actually maintain (and is cold-chain available)

Is 3PL Center a fit for your food or supplement brand

We work best with packaged-food and supplement brands shipping ambient SKUs across DTC and wholesale. If that’s you, get a quote with your SKU count and monthly volume — we’ll come back with real numbers.
