The Number That Decides Your Shipping Cost

When a box is light for its size, carriers stop billing by weight and start billing by volume. That is dimensional weight, and for oversized DTC it is usually the largest single line on the invoice.

Each carrier divides the volume of your box by its own DIM divisor:

Here is what that does in practice. A 30 x 24 x 20 inch carton is 14,400 cubic inches. On a UPS Daily divisor of 139 it bills as 104 lbs. If the product inside actually weighs 35 lbs, you are paying for 104. The box sets the price, not the product.

The rule worth memorizing: divide 1,728 by your divisor and you get the density at which dimensional weight takes over. At a divisor of 139 that is 12.4 lbs per cubic foot. At 166 it is 10.4 lbs per cubic foot. Anything lighter than that is being billed on air.

You can’t ship a sofa or a 75-pound e-bike in a standard box. These items require reinforced packaging and padding to survive the journey, without drastically increasing dimensional weight.

What Oversized Items Cost to Store

Oversized goods consume warehouse space differently, and two separate ceilings apply.

Height. Storage is billed on the height a pallet is actually built to, not a tier you sign up for. Our rates run $18.50 per pallet per month up to 60 inches, $25.00 up to 72 inches, and $40.00 above 72 inches. Oversized items reach those breaks fast, so a pallet built to 74 inches costs $40 where stopping at 72 would have cost $25.

Weight. A pallet position is rated to 2,500 lbs. For dense products that ceiling arrives long before the height one does, and the answer is a shorter, heavier pallet rather than stacking higher.

Footprint. Our pick rack locations are 30 x 36 inches with 24 inches of clear height, which most oversized SKUs will not fit.
