Surfboards and paddleboards are some of the harder things to ship in e-commerce. Long, light, fragile, and dimensional-weight expensive. Get the packing or the carrier wrong and you eat damage claims for a year.
Here’s what oversized board fulfillment actually involves and what to look for in a 3PL that handles the category.
Why oversized board shipping is different
Boards trigger oversized surcharges with every major carrier. Length, girth, and dimensional weight all push the bill up. The fragile shell adds insurance and damage exposure on top of that.
A 3PL that ships boards regularly negotiates oversized rates that aren’t available to a brand shipping a few hundred boards a year on its own.
Packing for fragile boards
Every board ships in a box built for its profile — reinforced corners, nose and tail protection, fin sleeves where applicable, and full perimeter padding. We don’t reuse generic cartons for boards because the damage rate goes up immediately.
On the inbound side, when containers arrive from your manufacturer we inspect for shipping damage before we put boards away. That gives you a clean inventory baseline.
Discounted carrier rates for oversized
Our oversized rates run materially below published carrier rates because of our volume. For a board brand, that’s usually the biggest swing in your per-order economics. See our oversized shipping breakdown for what counts as oversized and where the cost actually sits.
DTC, wholesale, or both
We can route a single SKU pool to DTC orders, Amazon FBM, and wholesale shipments to a surf shop. Same inventory, multiple channels, one source of truth in your portal.
On the wholesale side, we handle EDI — 850, 856, 810, ASN, UCC-128 and GS1 labels, routing guide compliance. That keeps chargebacks off your books when you sell into retail.
Returns without damage
Board returns are where margins disappear if you’re not careful. We inspect every returned board, restock sellable units, route repairable damage for refurb, and dispose of anything beyond repair. Real-time updates so your inventory count stays right.
Is 3PL Center a fit for your board brand
We work best with surfboard and paddleboard brands shipping somewhere between a few dozen and a few thousand boards a month across DTC and wholesale. If that’s you, get a quote — we come back with real numbers based on your SKU profile.
