Auto Parts Fulfillment: How a 3PL Handles OEM, Aftermarket, and EV Parts
Auto parts fulfillment combines small high-velocity SKUs with oversized freight items and growing EV battery hazmat shipping. How 3PL Center handles OEM, aftermarket, and EV auto parts in 2026. (Updated 5/6/26)

Auto parts fulfillment is the warehousing, inventory, and shipping of automotive parts for ecommerce brands and aftermarket sellers. It is harder than general ecommerce because the catalog mixes tiny parts (filters, sensors) with bulky ones (bumpers, hoods), and a growing number of EV parts ship with hazmat rules. 3PL Center handles auto parts fulfillment out of two warehouses near the major ports of California and New Jersey, with same-day shipping for orders received by 2 p.m. local.
Key Takeaways

Auto parts fulfillment needs a 3PL that can handle oversized freight, hazmat lithium-ion shipping, multi-channel selling on Amazon and eBay Motors, and accurate fitment data. Two California and New Jersey warehouses keep transit time short for most U.S. customers.

What is auto parts fulfillment?
Auto parts fulfillment is the work of storing, picking, packing, and shipping automotive parts that customers ordered online. It covers OEM and aftermarket replacement parts, performance and modification parts, EV parts, and accessories. The job runs from receiving a container of new inventory all the way through customer returns at the end of the line.
Why is auto parts fulfillment different from regular ecommerce?
Mixed package sizes. Filters and sensors fit in poly mailers. Bumpers ship freight. The same warehouse has to do both.
Hazmat shipping. EV battery cells, brake fluid, and many other auto fluids fall under DOT 49 CFR rules.
Fitment accuracy. Wrong-fit returns are the biggest cost in this category. Good parts data and barcode scanning at pick time matter a lot.
Multi-channel listing. Most auto parts sellers list on Amazon, eBay Motors, RockAuto, and their own Shopify at the same time.
VIN-level tracking. Some retailers want ASN data with the buyer VIN to tie warranty claims back to specific orders.
What types of auto parts does 3PL Center handle?
Replacement parts: filters, brakes, suspension, ignition, sensors, alternators, starters.
Performance and mods: cold air intakes, exhausts, lift kits, tuning modules, lighting upgrades.
Body and exterior: bumpers, fenders, mirrors, grilles, hoods, body kits.
Interior and electronics: dash cams, infotainment units, seat covers, floor mats.
EV-specific: charging cables, charger units, battery accessories. Battery cells handled with hazmat rules.
Tools and accessories: jacks, diagnostic scanners, garage equipment.
How do you ship oversized auto parts?
Oversized auto parts go either parcel with large package surcharges or LTL freight (less-than-truckload). The break point between parcel and freight is usually around 70 to 100 pounds for a single piece, or anything over 96 inches in any one direction. Large package surcharges from UPS and FedEx run a few hundred dollars per package depending on zone, so freight often comes out cheaper for items over 50 pounds even though it adds a day or two of transit.
We carry LTL accounts with multiple national carriers and route oversized parts through the cheapest one for each shipment. Brands stop overpaying for parcel on items that should have gone freight.
What about EV battery and lithium-ion parts?
Lithium-ion batteries (whether on their own, packed with equipment, or installed inside equipment) fall under hazmat rules from the Department of Transportation, ICAO, and IATA. Different rules apply for ground vs air, for small batteries vs large, and for batteries shipped alone vs inside a product. Packaging, labeling, and paperwork all have to be right or the carrier will reject the shipment.
We handle hazmat-classified auto parts with the right packaging, UN-rated boxes where required, and the paperwork each carrier wants. Talk to us before launching an EV product so we can flag any classification issues up front.
How do you handle auto parts returns?
Returns are higher in auto parts than in most categories because customers order the wrong part more often. Standard return processing here includes inspection, photo documentation of any damage, restocking of items in good shape, and disposition flags for items that should be marked refurbished, sold for parts, or scrapped. Returns show up in the WMS portal in real time so brands can make refund decisions quickly.
What carrier strategy works best for auto parts?
Use more than one carrier. Small parts under 5 pounds often ship cheapest on USPS Ground Advantage. Mid-range parcels split between UPS and FedEx based on zone. Oversized items go LTL freight. EV battery products may need ground-only routing (no air), which limits the carriers you can use. The WMS picks the right carrier per package at label time using rate shopping.
Can you support multi-channel auto parts sellers?
Yes. 3plify connects to Amazon Seller Central, Amazon Vendor Central, eBay (including eBay Motors), Shopify, BigCommerce, Walmart Marketplace, and most parts catalog systems through API or middleware. Inventory counts sync across every channel in real time so the same SKU shows the same available count everywhere. EDI is supported for major retail accounts that need it.
