TL;DR
In dropshipping, you sell products without holding any stock. The supplier or 3PL ships each order direct to your customer. It is fast to start, low on cash needs, and risky on margins, quality, and delivery times. A 3PL fixes the quality and speed problems by handling inventory, packing, and shipping under your brand.
What is dropshipping fulfillment?
Dropshipping is a way to sell products without holding any inventory yourself. When a customer buys from your store, the order goes to a supplier or warehouse who ships it straight to the buyer. You never see the product. You collect the sale, pass the order along, and keep the difference between the customer price and the supplier cost.
It is the lowest-friction way to launch a store. You can list new products in minutes, test demand without spending money on inventory, and scale up only the SKUs that sell. The trade-off is less control over what your customer experiences.
How dropshipping fulfillment actually works
Step by step, a single dropship order looks like this:
A customer places an order on your store.
The order details flow to your supplier, marketplace, or 3PL through an automated feed or app.
The supplier picks the product, packs it, and labels it with your customer's address.
The carrier (UPS, FedEx, USPS) picks it up and delivers it.
You get a tracking number to send the customer, and the supplier invoices you for the cost.
The honest pros and cons
What works well
Low startup cost. You do not buy inventory until something sells.
Easy to test. You can list a new product and see if it sells in a week.
Low operational lift. No warehouse, no packing tape, no carrier accounts.
Easy to scale up the winners. Add more ad spend behind a SKU and the supplier handles the order volume.
What hurts
Thin margins. Suppliers charge retail-ish per-unit prices, leaving you little room.
Slow shipping. Many overseas dropship suppliers ship in 2 to 4 weeks.
Quality risk. You cannot inspect product before it goes to a buyer.
Branding gap. Generic packaging and inserts make your store feel like everyone else's.
Returns mess. Most suppliers will not take returns, so you eat the cost or run them through your own reverse logistics.
Dropshipping vs holding stock with a 3PL
There is a middle path: buy inventory, send it to a US-based 3PL, and let the 3PL ship orders to your customers. You still avoid running your own warehouse, but you get faster shipping, branded packaging, and quality control. Margins are usually better because you buy at wholesale, and returns are easier because the 3PL handles them.
A lot of brands start with overseas dropshipping to validate a product, then move to a 3PL once a SKU is proven.
How to know it is time to switch from dropshipping to a 3PL
Watch for these signals:
You are doing 200+ orders a month on the same few SKUs
Customers are complaining about slow delivery times
You want branded packaging or marketing inserts
Returns and customer service are eating your time
You are running ads and need consistent shipping speed to keep ROAS healthy
